Apple has reassured Indian government officials that its manufacturing and investment plans in the country remain firmly on track, despite recent comments by former US President Donald Trump urging the tech giant to halt iPhone production in India.
Has Apple CEO Tim Cook Ignored Donald Trump's Suggestions?
According to a PTI report, Indian authorities reached out to Apple following Trump’s remarks made at a business forum in Doha. Trump claimed he had asked Apple CEO Tim Cook to “stop building all over India” and bring production back to the United States.
“I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday,” Trump said. “I said to him, Tim, you’re my friend. But now I hear you’re building all over India. I don’t want you building in India if you want to take care of India.”
Officials Confirm iPhone Manufacturing in India Intact
He went on to claim that Apple had agreed to increase production within the US, though he did not offer any specifics. Trump suggested that iPhones for the Indian market could continue to be made locally, but production for American consumers should shift back to the US.
Despite the rhetoric, Apple has reportedly conveyed to Indian officials that its commitment to India remains unchanged. “Apple has said that its investment plans in India are intact and it proposes to continue to have India as a major manufacturing base for its products,” one senior official said.
While Apple has not issued a formal public statement, sources say the company has privately reaffirmed that India continues to play a vital role in its global supply chain strategy.
The tech giant has been ramping up its manufacturing footprint in India over the past few years, with major suppliers like Foxconn and Pegatron operating production units in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The country is seen as a key alternative to China amid global efforts to diversify supply chains.
Apple’s growing presence in India also aligns with the Indian government’s ambitions to become a global electronics manufacturing hub.
