‘California is trying to steal the Election, India is…,’ Elon Musk Raises Question on Counting of Votes in the US

Elon Musk: In a recent online discussion, Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and owner of X (formerly Twitter), sparked debates about the efficiency and transparency of the US voting system. Comparing it to India’s rapid vote-counting process, Musk questioned why California was still tallying votes weeks after the November 5 presidential election. His remarks, paired with subtle jabs at the prolonged counting process, have reignited global conversations on voting technologies and processes.

Elon Musk Criticises California’s Vote Counting

Elon Musk’s comments came in response to a post by a user on X, highlighting the efficiency of India’s election system. The post referenced a June 2024 Newsweek article titled How India Counted 640 Million Votes in a Day. Musk remarked, “India counted 640 million votes in 1 day. California is still counting votes.”

Adding to the conversation, another post shared by DogeDesigner stated, “India counted 640 million votes in a single day. California is still counting 15 million votes… 18 days later.” Musk replied with a single word: “Tragic.”

Several users took to the comment section to share their views. One user wrote, “And Indian voters have voter ID too!” A second added, “It’s worse than that. California is no doubt still printing ballots.” A third commented, “DOGE should learn about elections from India.” A fourth remarked, “It’s not tragic; it’s corruption.” A fifth shared, “The US is the richest, most powerful, most technologically advanced country in human history. There is no excuse for us to not be able to count all the votes in a single day and require an ID to vote.”

Elon Musk and BJP Leader Debate on EVM Security

Earlier, Elon Musk raised concerns about the security of electronic voting machines (EVMs). On X, he implied that even a small chance of hacking is unacceptable, sparking a global conversation about the dependability of such systems.

Responding to Musk’s concerns, BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar defended India’s EVMs, stating they are secure, offline, and factory-programmed. Unlike some systems used internationally, Indian EVMs cannot be reconfigured or hacked due to their design. Chandrasekhar emphasized that these machines are a testament to India’s commitment to fair and transparent elections.
