Ratan Tata 86th Birthday: Ratan Tata, the business magnate, turned 86 today. On December 28, 1937, he was born in Mumbai, India, to Naval and Sooni Tata. Entrepreneur, industrialist, and chairman emeritus of Tata Sons is widely recognised for his national and international charitable endeavours.

1998: Tata Indica Hits the Roads

This year saw the launch of the conglomerate's first passenger vehicle, the Tata Indica. In less than two years, the car rose to the top of its category.

2000: Tata Tea Secures Tetley Group

The Tetley Group, the second-largest tea manufacturer and distributor in the world, was purchased by Tata Tea, which is now known as Tata Global Beverages. The biggest tea company in the UK is called Tetley.

2001: Tata Group's Insurance Venture with Tata AIG

The Tata group's re-entry into the insurance industry is symbolised by Tata AIG, a joint venture between the Tata group and American International Group Inc (AIG). Dorab Tata established the group's insurance business, New India Assurance, in 1919. It was nationalised in 1956.

2002: Tata Group's Purchase of Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd

The group buys out Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. for a substantial amount. The first PSU in India to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange was VSNL, which was established in 1986.

2003: TCS Emerges as the First Indian Software Company to Surpass $1 Billion Revenue

The first Indian software company to generate more than $1 billion in revenue was Tata Consultancy Services. A year later, the company went public.

2004: Tata Motors Lists on the New York Stock Exchange

The New York Stock Exchange is home to Tata Motors' listing. In the same year, the company also purchases Daewoo Motors' heavy vehicle division.

2007: Tata Steel's Acquisition of Corus

The second-biggest steel producer in Europe, Corus, is an Anglo-Dutch company that Tata Steel has acquired.

2008: Tata Motors Unveils the Nano

The cheapest passenger car in the nation, the Nano, is unveiled by Tata Motors. Although it now costs between Rs. 1.5 and 2 lakh, it was originally known as the Rs. 1 lakh car.

2008: Ford Sells Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata Motors

Ford sells its Jaguar and Land Rover businesses to Tata Motors, which then creates Jaguar Land Rover.

2012: Tata Global Beverages and Starbucks Join Forces
