In a visionary, and completely unpredictable, move that no one saw coming, Zomato co-founder Deepinder Goyal has thrown himself into the aviation space, hoping to change how millions of Indians travel between small towns and cities. His new project, LAT Aerospace, is to allow mass market access to fast, low-cost air travel, and to do it in very unequally represented Tier 2 and Tier 3 locations.

The Vision is to Make Air Travel Affordable So That the Common Man Can Use It

Goyal’s mission is simple but powerful: make air transportation as accessible and inexpensive as bus transportation. LAT Aerospace aims to operate STOL (short take-off and landing) aircraft that will take off from small (we’re talking “air-stops” that look like parking lots) airfields. It will completely bypass big airport infrastructure and save travelers both time and money.

This has the potential to completely change the game for millions of people who otherwise make long intercity journeys by train and bus.

The plans of LAT Aerospace

Utilize Disused Airstrips: India has approximately 450 airstrips, but only 150 are operational. LAT Aerospace wishes to operationalize as many airstrips as possible to enhance regional connectivity.

Facilitate the Journey of Air Transportation: LAT Aerospace flights will operate from air-stops rather than major airports, eliminating the clutter of baggage, security lines, and delays.

Provide Affordable, Fast, and Frequent Air Travel: The intent is to make air travel as easy as getting in your car each day, rather than a privilege.

Goyal's investment and role

Deepinder Goyal personally put $20 million into LAT Aerospace.

LAT Aerospace has raised a total of $50 million.

Goyal will become a non-executive founder, advising on the strategy and growth of the company without day-to-day control.

Who will benefit

This is anticipated to benefit:

Commuters in remote areas are deprived of access to fast, direct transport.

Local businesses need reliable regional logistics.

Students, healthcare seekers, and job seekers are travelling to nearby cities.

Why does it present a strategic masterstroke?

  • First-mover advantage in a pre-established but seldom-used space.
  • Solves genuine problems like long commutes with poor connectivity.
  • Broad appeal by addressing the "common man" as opposed to exclusively catering towards high-end fliers.

Next Move

Deepinder Goyal's transition from food to flight could change the face of regional mobility in India. LAT Aerospace is more than just another startup; it is a commitment to democratizing air travel for everyday aviation in India. If all goes to plan, it very well could be India's largest transportation revolution in decades.
