To control the skyrocketing prices of tomatoes, the government has started selling tomatoes at cheap prices at government shops. In Delhi NCR, from Friday onwards, tomatoes have started selling at only Rs 90 per kg, not Rs 200, at some identified shops and places. After Delhi NCR, the sale of tomatoes at cheap prices will be started at government shops in other cities as well.
Due to heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the central government has procured tomatoes from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra to contain the rising prices of tomatoes across the country. Officials of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs had said in the past that by Friday, the stock of tomatoes would be available to the consumers through retail shops at discounted prices in the Delhi-NCR region.
The National Cooperative Consumer Federation of India (NCCF) today started selling tomatoes through mobile vans at Rs 90 per kg in the Delhi NCR region. NCCF has started selling tomatoes which reached at Rs 224 at a discounted rate of Rs 90 per kg. Sales will start from tomorrow through some centres.
NCCF Managing Director Anees Joseph Chandra said that we have fixed the price at Rs 90 per kg, while the procurement rate is Rs 120-130 per kg. The loss will be borne by the central government. He said that to give relief to the consumers, the center is giving subsidy of more than 30 percent on tomatoes from the current market rate.
Where to buy cheap tomatoes in Delhi and Noida
NCCF in Delhi has started selling through 30 mobile vans in all 11 districts at 11 am on Friday. There is a plan to sell about 17 thousand kg tomatoes on the first day.
On Saturday, NCCF plans to sell around 20,000 kg of tomatoes. The quantity will be increased to 40,000 kgs per day as the sales increase.
In Noida, the co-operative society will sell tomatoes at a subsidized rate in its office located at Rajnigandha Chowk. It will also be sold through mobile vans in Greater Noida and other places.
