Google to lay off 12,000 employees

Alphabet which owns Google announced on January 20 that it will slash 12,000 jobs or 6% of its global workforce.

Google’s parent company Alphabet announces plans to cut 12,000 jobs

Chief Executive Officer, Sunder Pichai wrote he took “full responsibility for the decisions that led us here”

Google stated that layoffs are global and will impact US staff immediately.

Further Pichai stated in a note “I am confident about the huge opportunity in front of us thanks to the strength of our mission, the value of our products and services, and our early investments in AI.”

The announcement comes at a time of economic uncertainty as well as technological promise, with Google and Microsoft investing in generative artificial intelligence, a fledgling area of software.

The layoffs affect teams across the company, including recruiting, some corporate functions, and some engineering and product teams.

This incident comes after rival Microsoft Corp stated that it would lay off 10,000 workers

Google joins the ranks of Tech majors such as Amazon.com, Meta Platforms Inc and Microsoft Corp to announce layoff’s which have impacted thousands of employees.

Google announced earlier in the day that it will defer a portion of its employees’ year-end bonuses as part of a transition to a new performance management system.

Spokesperson the Google informed media that move was communicated to staff last year

“The company will pay 80% advance bonus to eligible employees initially and the remainder in later months,”
