Aadhaar Card: The national government reacted to a Moody’s Investors Service study that highlighted concerns about the security and privacy risks of India’s Aadhaar system. According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Aadhaar is the most trusted digital ID in worldwide, and the study was made without referencing any primary or secondary evidence or research.
Biometric Technology Reliability and Service Denials in Aadhaar
Moody’s further questioned the dependability of biometric technologies, claiming that the Aadhaar system “frequently leads to service denials.” It went on to say that the accuracy of biometric technology for manual labourers in hot, humid areas is “questionable.”
Aadhaar Integration in MGNREGS and Payment Process
The IT ministry contended that the planting of Aadhaar in the MGNREGS database was done without needing the workers to authenticate using their fingerprints and claimed that the report was a “obvious reference” to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). It further noted that workers are not need to authenticate using their fingerprints in order to get paid under the plan because funds are credited directly to their accounts.
Security of Aadhaar Database Addressed by IT Ministry
Regarding the questions posed regarding security, the IT ministry stated that the matter had been brought up numerous times in Parliament and that the MPs had been notified that there had been no compromise of the Aadhaar database as of now.

“Further, Parliament has laid down robust privacy protections in the law governing the Aadhaar system and these are observed through robust technological and organisational arrangements. State-of-the-art security solutions are in place, along with a federated database and encryption of data both at rest and in motion,” said the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. To refute the Moody’s report, the government also mentioned the accolades the Aadhar system earned from the IMF and the World Bank.
