Income Tax News: The Income Tax Department has issued a clarification regarding false information circulating on social media about an extension of the deadline for e-filing Income Tax Returns (ITR). The misleading information, reportedly from a clipping of @sandeshnews, falsely claims that the deadline for filing ITRs has been extended to August 31, 2024. The department has categorically stated that this is fake news.

The official statement from the Income Tax Department reads: “It has come to our knowledge that a clipping of @sandeshnews is circulating on social media regarding the extension of the date for e-filing of ITR. This is FAKE news. Taxpayers are advised to follow updates from the official website/portal of @IncomeTaxIndia.”

Fake News Claims:

The circulating fake news states that the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline for filing ITRs by one month, now allowing taxpayers to file until August 31, 2024. It also falsely claims that the extension was granted due to repeated server issues on the IT portal, which allegedly prevented many taxpayers from filing their returns by the original deadline of July 31, 2024.

“Now, IT returns can be filed until August 31, with the deadline extended by one month. CBDT has extended the deadline, allowing tax consultants to file returns. Due to repeated server issues on the IT portal, taxpayers were unable to file their returns by the original deadline of July 31. As a result, the deadline has been extended by one month to August 31.”

Official Deadline Remains July 31, 2024

The Income Tax Department has emphasized that the official deadline for e-filing ITRs remains July 31, 2024.
