Co-founder of Infosys Narayana Murthy has stated that building up his company required him to put in around 90 hours a week, and that effort was not waste. The Economic Times quoted Murthy months after he advocated for young people in the nation to work at least 70 hours a week.
"I used to be in the office at 6:20 am and leave office at 8:30 pm and worked six days a week," Murthy told the portal in an interview, adding, "During my entire 40-plus years of professional life, I worked 70 hours a week." "When we had a six-day week - till 1994 - I used to work at least 85 to 90 hours a week. That has not been a waste," Murthy said. "I know every nation that became prosperous did so through hard work," he said.
He added that his parents had taught him that working "very, very hard" was the only way to get out of poverty. But he went on to say that this is when one really benefits from every hour of work.
Productivity is not solely determined by the number of hours worked. The quality of work, focus, efficiency, and overall well-being also play crucial roles. Working excessively long hours without breaks may lead to burnout, negatively impacting productivity. Striking a balance between work and rest, along with effective time management, tends to contribute more to sustained productivity.
