Footwear Prices

Footwear Prices: Prices for shoes will probably increase from August 1, 2024, as new quality criteria take effect. The Bureau of Indian standards (BIS) has released a statement stating that all slippers, sandals, and shoes offered in the market must adhere to these new quality criteria. The Quality Control Order (QCO), which is the driving force behind this shift, requires footwear producers to adhere to IS 6721 and IS 10702 requirements. It follows that a rise in the cost of production for these goods is anticipated.

Exemptions for Small Manufacturers

Manufacturers with an annual turnover of less than ₹50 crore are exempt from this BIS rule. Additionally, the regulation will not apply to existing stock. Sellers must, however, upload details of their old stock on the BIS website to ensure transparency.

Comprehensive Coverage

The revised BIS norms will affect 46 different footwear items starting August 1. The BIS has provided detailed information on its website to raise awareness among manufacturers and consumers.

Stricter Material Testing

According to the new standards, chemical characteristics of raw materials used in footwear, such as rexine, insoles, and linings, must be rigorously tested. To guarantee comfort and durability, the exterior material will also go through rigorous testing for strength, flexibility, and tear resistance.

Enhanced Consumer Experience

The BIS claims that tougher, more resilient footwear will be produced as a result of these new standards, lessening consumer discomfort. Better materials would probably result in higher manufacturing costs, but the BIS has not discussed how these costs might be controlled or reduced.

Role of BIS

The Bureau of Indian Standards plays a crucial role in standardization, quality assurance, and conformity assessment of goods and services in India. The Indian Standards set by BIS form the foundation for product certification schemes, offering third-party assurance of quality, safety, and reliability to consumers.
