Punjab News/– In a significant step toward environmental conservation, Punjab, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has launched an ambitious Rs. 792.88 crore project in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The initiative is set to enhance the state’s forest cover, promote biodiversity, and support sustainable practices, with a target of achieving 7.5% forest cover by 2030.
Key Goals: Increasing Forest Cover and Agroforestry Initiatives
The project aims to increase the state’s forest cover from its current levels, aligning with national targets and climate goals. With 7.5% forest cover as the 2030 target, Punjab plans to focus on areas with high potential for reforestation and afforestation. A key part of the project involves promoting agroforestry, which will allow farmers to plant trees alongside crops, improving soil quality and providing additional income streams.
Pollution Reduction and Improved Air Quality
Another crucial objective of this green initiative is to reduce pollution levels across the state, which has been a significant challenge, particularly in urban areas. With increased green cover and sustainable forestry practices, the government anticipates a positive impact on air quality, providing healthier living conditions for residents. The initiative is also expected to support climate resilience, as trees play an essential role in carbon absorption and regulating local temperatures.
Boosting Ecotourism and Rural Economy
The project also aims to capitalize on Punjab’s rich natural resources to promote ecotourism, attracting nature enthusiasts and supporting the local economy. The state’s unique biodiversity and planned green spaces are expected to draw tourists, contributing to rural job creation and increased income for local communities. Enhanced ecotourism aligns with the broader vision of sustainable development, making Punjab a key destination for nature-based tourism.
Collaboration with JICA: A Strategic Partnership
Partnering with JICA, known for its expertise in environmental projects, brings global knowledge and technology to Punjab’s initiative. JICA will provide technical support and expertise to ensure effective implementation and sustainability of the project’s goals. This collaboration emphasizes the state’s commitment to long-term environmental benefits and showcases Punjab as a leader in regional conservation efforts.
