The digital landscape in India has reached new heights, especially since the introduction of Unified Payment Interface (UPI). Millions of Indians use UPI for transactions, with apps like Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay, making it easier to send money digitally. Today, many people do not even carry cash with them, showing the trust and dependency on UPI in today’s digital world. However, like any system, UPI has its own challenges. A common issue that many users face is sending money to the wrong UPI ID or number. If this happens, it can be difficult to retrieve the money. But don’t worry—this article will guide you on how to get your money back if you’ve mistakenly sent it to the wrong UPI.
How to Recover Money Sent to the Wrong UPI ID or Number?
When an incorrect UPI transaction occurs, most individuals are unaware of how to recover their money. Here are practical ways to get your money back if you sent money to the wrong UPI ID or number.
Step 1: Act Fast—Notify Your Bank Within 3 Days
The first and most important thing to do when you send money to the wrong UPI ID is to act quickly. According to RBI guidelines, reporting the mistake within three days of the transaction is crucial to maximise your chances of getting the money back. If you wait too long, it may be more difficult to recover the funds.
Keep a record of the transaction. This could be a screenshot of the payment confirmation, or any details showing that the money was sent to the wrong UPI number. This evidence will be essential when you report the issue to your bank or app.
Step 2: Contact Customer Care for Immediate Assistance
If you used a UPI app like Paytm, PhonePe, or Google Pay, don’t waste time. Contact their customer support immediately. Every app has a dedicated helpline, which you can easily find in the app’s settings or help section. Reach out to them and explain the situation. They might be able to reverse the transaction or guide you through the recovery process.
If you used a bank’s UPI service, call their toll-free helpline or visit the nearest branch to report the error. Be sure to provide all relevant details, including the transaction ID, amount, and the recipient’s incorrect UPI ID. Remember, the quicker you act, the better your chances of success.
Step 3: Escalate the Matter to the Banking Ombudsman
If your bank or UPI app’s customer support isn’t responding, don’t lose hope. You have the option to escalate the issue to the Banking Ombudsman. The Banking Ombudsman is a neutral body that helps resolve grievances between banks and their customers.
To file a complaint, you can call the toll-free number 1800-120-1740 or 022-45414740. Make sure to provide all the necessary details about the incorrect UPI transaction. The Banking Ombudsman can intervene and help you recover your funds if the issue is not resolved within the prescribed time.
Step 4: File a Complaint with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI)
As the organisation overseeing UPI transactions, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) can also help in such cases. Visit the official NPCI website and head to the UPI section. Under this section, you’ll find the ‘Complaint Section’ where you can report issues related to wrong UPI transactions. Fill in the required information, such as your transaction ID, mobile number, and details of the incorrect transaction, and submit your complaint.
According to RBI guidelines, banks are expected to resolve such issues within 24 to 48 hours. If your bank fails to act within this period, following up with them or filing a complaint with NPCI can be effective next steps.
Step 5: Reach Out to the Recipient (If Possible)
This step may not always be practical, especially if the recipient is untraceable. However, if you know the person who mistakenly received the money, it’s worth attempting to contact them. Politely request that they return the funds. If they are genuine, they will most likely cooperate and send the money back to you.
Quick Action is Key
Mistakes with UPI transactions can happen to anyone, and while it can be stressful, following the right steps can often lead to a resolution. The key is to act fast—notify your bank, contact customer support, escalate the issue if necessary, and consider reaching out to NPCI. The sooner you report the wrong UPI transaction, the higher the likelihood of getting your money back.
