Stock Market Today: As officials of President Joe Biden and congressional Republicans concluded another round of debt ceiling negotiations on Tuesday with no signs of success, domestic indices may open in the red amid unfavourable global cues. In today's early morning session, the Nifty futures on the Singapore Exchange (SGX) were trading 70 points, or 0.38%, lower at 18,291.5. Asian markets were trading lower: China's Shanghai Composite index sank 0.80%, South Korea's KOSPI fell 0.20%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.74%, and Japan's Nikkei 225 plunged 1.10%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), the S&P 500, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq all concluded the overnight session with significant losses.
Stock Market Today: National Stock Exchange
The National Stock Exchange's F&O prohibition list for May 24 includes the stocks of Delta Corp and Indiabulls Housing Finance. Stocks are not permitted in the F&O sector, according to the NSE, when their holding exceeds 95% of the MWPL (market-wide position limit). No new positions are allowed for F&O contracts in that stock during the F&O ban period.
According to preliminary data made public on the NSE, domestic institutional investors (DII) bought shares worth net Rs 397.29 crore and foreign institutional investors (FII) acquired shares worth net Rs 182.51 crore on May 23.
Caution may prevail on Dalal Street amidst debt ceiling overhang, F&O expiry
Despite positive economic statistics and stalled debt ceiling talks in Washington, US markets finished lower on Tuesday. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq both had declines of more than 1% while the Dow Jones dropped by about 250 points. Unexpectedly, both US corporate activity and home sales increased to their greatest levels in over a year. Asian markets have also started out lower, following a dismal session on Wall Street.
Stock Market Today: From Yesterday
On Tuesday, the Nifty 50 rose 33 points or 0.18% to 18,348 and Sensex rose 18.11 points or 0.03% to end at 61,981.79. In sectoral indices, Bank Nifty climbed 69.35 points or 0.16% to 43,954.45 and Nifty IT fell 133.60 points or 0.46% to 28,873.70.
