Top gainers of the day: Adani Ports, Adani Enterprises, UPL, Tata Steel, and Coal India were among the top Nifty losers, whereas ONGC, Tata Consumer Products, Britannia Industries, and Cipla were the top gainers. Within hours, the market had plunged to new lows as widespread selling caused the benchmarks to erase the morning gains and close close to the day's low on December 20.
Sensex and NSE Nifty50
The Nifty was down 302.90 points, or 1.41 percent, at 21,150.20 at close, while the Sensex was down 930.88 points, or 1.30 percent, at 70,506.31. The Sensex hit 71,913.07 and the Nifty 21,593 during the first hour of trading, as the market opened gap-up and continued to rise to record highs. The indices closed close to the day's lowest levels as a sharp decline in the middle of the session erased all of the gains.
