Centre accuses opposition-ruled-states for coal panic, says they did not lift their quota

The Centre said the Opposition-ruled state governments are to be answerable for the current coal shortage and power crisis the situation could have been averted if states had lifted their quota from the stockpile of Coal India. The situation could have been averted if states had lifted their quota from the stockpile of Coal India, government sources said.

An official said, ”States failed to do that despite several reminders since January 2021. Some of the states have failed to scale up coal extraction in their own allocated mines.”
Meanwhile, Coal India has scaled up the production in the last four days from 1.57 million tonnes to 1.94 million tonnes per day. It will be scaled up further and by the next week, it is expected to reach 2 MT per day.

“The demand for power went up because of multiple reasons like emergence of the economy from various kinds of restrictions, rise in gas prices raising the dependence on thermal power plants and states failing to anticipate and prepare for rise in demand,” sources said.

Ranveer Singh is set to take up the host chair for quiz show The Big Picture. Before kick-starting the quiz show, the actor himself took to challenge and answered a few picture-based questions.

Meanwhile, The Ministry of Coal on Tuesday launched the auction process of 40 new coal mines in which 21 new mines are under the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act 2015 and 19 are under the Tranche three of Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act 1957.

In an official statement, the ministry stated that the step has been taken following the successful auction of 28 coal mines in the first two tranches and there shall be a total of 88 coal mines on offer at present. “Total geological resources of about 55 billion tonnes of coal are on offer from these 88 mines, of which 57 are fully explored mines and 31 are partially explored mines. There are four coking coal mines on offer,” the statement from the Ministry of Coal said.
