Centre To Revise Bill To Regulate Digital Media ?

Digital media is also being included for the first time in India in the new law of registration of media.

If the bill is approved, digital news sites could face action for “violation” including cancellation of registration and fines.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has started the process of amending the registration of the Press and Periodicals Bill and has also included news on digital media through any electronic medium in its purview.

Digital news publishers must apply for registration and do so within 90 days of the law coming into force. Along with this, digital publishers will have to register with the Press Registrar General, who will have the authority to take action against various publications in case of violation.

They can suspend or cancel the registration and also impose fine. According to officials, an Appellate Board with the Chairman of the Press Council of India has been planned.

Digital media has not been subject to any law or regulation till now. These amendments will bring digital media under the control of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

According to sources, the bill is yet to be ‘approved’ by the Prime Minister’s Office and other stakeholders.
