Children who lost their parents due to COVID-19 will receive specialised counselling : UP govt

Children who lost their parents due to Covid-19 will now be provided with trauma-informed counselling. “The Uttar Pradesh government is focusing on a trauma-informed approach to mental and emotional health therapy as one of its initiatives, the first of its type in the nation. The state administration has taken action to assist those children who have lost their parents to the epidemic and are now left with a lifelong void and intense sadness, according to a news release from the state government.

According to the press release, trauma-informed counselling is a type of special care treatment in which experienced counsellors interact with a depressed person in a way that enables the execution of an efficient treatment process through customised interventions.

In 75 districts, more than 300 counsellors have received the necessary training. “There is a significant need, now more than ever, to stand with the impacted children throughout their lives so that they can enjoy a life of quality,” said Manoj Rai, director of the women and child development department.

In June 2021, the Uttar Pradesh Mukhya Mantri Bal Sewa Yojana was launched. The government decided to reach out to them and assist them in overcoming their loss and distress through trauma-informed counselling, the press release stated, keeping in mind the mental health of the children who have either lost one or both parents as a result of Covid-19.

The programme in Uttar Pradesh has identified more than 11,000 such kids. In order to identify the instances and assist them in overcoming bereavement and post-traumatic stress disorder, four counsellors from the District Child Protection Unit and One Stop centres were trained in each district, according to Rai.

These therapists visited these kids’ homes and gave them trauma-informed counselling. “Counseling fosters a positive outlook on life. The loss of confidence strikes hardest after a trauma, according to Dr. Abhishek Shukla, secretary-general of the Association of International Doctors.

During an examination and field trips in May 2022, it was discovered that several kids had experienced significant trauma.
