Chinese ‘Spy’ Ship Cleared To Dock By Sri Lanka Amid India’s Objection

Sri Lanka on Saturday allowed Chinese ship Yuan Wang-5 to dock at its Hambantota port, which is believed to be a spy ship. This Chinese ship Yuan Wang 5 will land at Hambantota International Port on August 16, five days behind its scheduled time, which was earlier scheduled to arrive on August 11. India had expressed concern over this with Sri Lanka, citing its national security, due to which there was a delay in allowing Sri Lanka to allow the Chinese ship to land at its port.

Sri Lanka has said that it has asked China to postpone the voyage of its ship Yuang Wang 5 to Hambantota port earlier this week. The Chinese ship was to dock for refueling at the Chinese leased Hambantota port on August 11 and was to depart on August 17. But it will now reach the port on August 16.

The Ministry of External Affairs said in its statement, “The Ministry has asked to postpone the visit of the Chinese Embassy in Colombo to the port of Hambantota. The Ministry said that it will reaffirm the enduring friendship and excellent relations between Sri Lanka and China Wants, which is built on a solid foundation. As recently reiterated by the two foreign ministers Ali Sabri and Wang Yi at a bilateral meeting in Phnom Penh in August.”

India had expressed its security concerns over the docking of the ship in Hambantota as it was shown as a spy ship. The spy ship can map the ocean floor, which is important for the Chinese Navy’s anti-submarine operations. The Chinese ship Yuan Wang 5 Ko was built in 2007 as a research and survey and has a capacity of 11,000 tons.

During this important visit to the major Sri Lankan port, it may conduct satellite research in the north-western part of the Indian Ocean region, which may pose security concerns for India.

Sri Lanka has taken loan from China

It was built in lieu of a loan given to Sri Lanka by China after the lease on the Hambantota port, located about 250 km from Colombo. Has been handed over to the Chinese on lease and now China’s spy ship is located in Sri Lanka.
