Cyclone Sitrang is likely to be formed over the Bay of Bengal by October 23

Before Diwali, the threat of a terrible cyclone is looming over Odisha. According to IMD, Cyclone C-wave is active over North Andaman Sea and its adjoining areas. A low pressure area is very likely to form over the east-central Bay of Bengal in the next 12 hours. The Meteorological Department said that on October 22, Cyclone C-wave can turn into a depression in the central Bay of Bengal. After the next 48 hours, on October 23 or 24, the cyclone can intensify into a cyclonic storm in the Bay of West Central Bengal. However, the Odisha government has ordered senior officials of cyclone prone districts to be on alert before the cyclone. In view of the possible storm, the government has ordered to cancel the leave of government employees.

In view of the situation, an alert has been issued in the coastal districts of Odisha. The administration has instructed the fishermen not to venture into the sea from October 22. Also, heavy rain has been predicted in the coastal areas of the state from October 22. During this, the wind speed is likely to be 45 to 65 kmph in the coastal areas.

The Odisha government held a high level meeting with the senior officers of the state and the collector of cyclone prone districts. The state government has canceled the leave of its employees, apart from keeping the Odisha Disaster Rapid Response Force (ODRAF) and fire brigade ready. Along with this, a warning has been issued in seven coastal districts of the state. Odisha government has issued an alert for Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Balasore, Bhadrak, Khurda and Ganjam districts in view of the cyclone. Like every time, this time also zero casualty is in the focus of the government.

These steps are being taken

According to the information received, instructions have also been issued to the collectors of cyclone prone districts to take the villagers residing on the beach to safer places before October 22. Shelter sites are being prepared in coastal villages to avoid cyclone. Senior district officials have issued warnings to fishermen not to venture into the sea for fishing. Along with this, people are being alerted through the Public Announcement System.

Odisha has faced ten major cyclones since 1999. On 29 October 1999, the Odisha Super Cyclone killed about 10,000 people from the coastal districts of Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara. Apart from this, on 11 October 2013, the Odisha coast also faced Phailin cyclone.

At the same time, Cyclone Hudhud hit the southern coast of Odisha on 12 October 2014. Cyclone Titli On October 11, 2018, cyclonic storm Titli made landfall on the southwest coast of Gopalpur near Palasa in Andhra Pradesh. Extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani hit the Odisha coast at Puri on 3 May 2019 with a wind speed of about 175 kmph.
