Dalit labourers locked up in Karnataka, pregnant worker lost baby

A unique case has come to light in Karnataka of keeping laborers captive and assaulting them. According to the information received, the owner of a coffee plantation in Chikkamagaluru here had kept 16 laborers of the Dalit community in captivity for a long time. Not only this, the plantation owner and his son also used to beat up the captives. According to the police, the name of the accused is Jagdish Gowda and he is said to be a supporter of BJP.

The victims have alleged that Jagdish Gowda and his son tortured them badly. A pregnant woman was also among those taken captive. It is alleged that the pregnant woman lost her child during the assault by the plantation owner. Presently the woman is undergoing treatment in the hospital.

At present, in this case, the police have registered an FIR against the plantation owner Jagadish Gowda and his son Tilak Gowda under relevant sections. Both the accused are said to be absconding at present. Police is on the lookout for both. Police said that the Dalit laborers were kept captive on the accused for 15 days. During interrogation it has come to the fore that the plantation owner owed nine lakh rupees to the laborers, which they were not paying. Because of this, the plantation owner had taken those people captive.

A senior police officer said that on October 8, in this case, some people had lodged a complaint with the Balehonnur police station that Jagdish Gowda was harassing his relatives. However, he later withdrew the complaint that day. The next day the pregnant victim was admitted to the hospital for treatment and a fresh complaint was lodged. The SP also took cognizance of this matter. After which the police went to the spot and investigation was also done.

At the same time, after the disclosure of the matter, the state BJP unit has issued a statement denying any connection with the accused.
