Delhi High court grants bail to Devangana Kalita, 'member of Pinjra Tod' in Delhi Riots case

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday (September 1) granted bail to a member of Pinjra Tod, a women's collective, in a case related to the communal violence in northeast Delhi during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in February.

The court granted bail to Devangana Kalita on furnishing of a personal bond of Rs 20,000 and a surety of the like amount. It also directed that she will not directly or indirectly influence any witness or tamper with the evidence and not leave the country without permission of the trial court.

Kalita, will, however not be released from jail as she is under custody in another first information report filed against her under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, according to Live Law. Her bail plea was rejected in the fourth case on August 28.

The order was pronounced by Justice Suresh Kumar Kait after it was reserved in August.

Kalita had argued that there was no evidence to show her participation in the violence and that she had only participated in the protests condeming the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The Delhi Police had claimed that the violence was a part of the "conspiracy to lower the country's image" when President of the United States Donald Trump was visiting India, stated the media report.
