Donald Trump: Lawmakers Blast Trump’s India Tariffs as Unlawful, Washington Divided as Global Markets Tremble

Several US lawmakers have criticized Donald Trump tariffs on India terming them as illegal. Meanwhile, several US states have filed a lawsuit against Trump's $100,000 fee on new H-1B visas for highly skilled foreign workers.

Donald Trump: A fresh challenge to the tariff regime on India has been mounted by three members of the US House of Representatives.

The move is aimed at overturning the national emergency declaration that enabled Trump to levy duties as high as 50 percent on India.

It was argued by the lawmakers that the tariffs on India were counterproductive, illegal and disproportionately hurting consumers and businesses in America.

The resolution was introduced by representatives Deborah Ross, Marc Veasey, and Raja Krishnamoorthi. It specifically targets the additional secondary tariffs that were imposed by the Trump administration on August 27, 2025, on top of earlier reciprocal duties.

Donald Trump Tariffs Hurting Common Americans

Deborah Ross said the economy of North Carolina is deeply connected through trade to India. She warned the tariffs imposed by Trump were undermining a vital economic partnership.

Marc Veasey said Donald Trump tariffs are a direct burden on households. It was added that India has been an important economic, cultural and strategic partner and these duties are a tax on North Texans who are already finding it challenging with rising costs.

Krishnamoorthi remarked the tariffs are harmful to US workers and supply chains. He added a quick end to tariffs would be vital to strengthen US-India economic and security ties.

More Problems for Donald Trump

In a joint statement, the lawmakers said Trump must be stopped from using emergency powers to unilaterally impose misguided policies.

In another development, a lawsuit was filed by California and 19 other states to block Trump’s $100,000 fee on new H-1B visas for highly skilled foreign workers.

In a release, California attorney General Rob Bonta said the US President lacks the power to impose the fee and that it violates the federal law.
