Presidential election: Draupadi Murmu, the NDA candidate in the presidential election, will reach Kolkata this evening for the election campaign. She will campaign tomorrow morning and will meet BJP MLAs and MPs. The BJP has 75 MLAs and 17 MPs in the state, out of which five MLAs and one MP have joined the TMC.
It was also reported that Yashwant Sinha, whose name was forwarded by TMC, refused to come to West Bengal for campaigning. In fact, Mamta Banerjee fears that TMC's tribal votes in Jangalmahal and North Bengal may be eroded because Murmu is a tribal and TMC is opposing them.
Murmu is touring various states to seek the support of the MPs.
It is said that Draupadi Murmu will first visit Swami Vivekananda's ancestral home in the city on the morning of 12 July. Then she will meet the BJP MPs in a hotel at around 10 am.
Draupadi Murmu was earlier scheduled to visit Kolkata on July 9, but it was canceled in view of the one-day national mourning announced in honor of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
On the other hand, Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray has called a meeting in Mumbai today to discuss the Presidential election.
According to the party's Sindhudurg MP Vinayak Raut, the meeting will be held at 12 noon. Some party MPs had earlier appealed to the party leadership to support NDA's presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu. According to Raut, the agenda of the meeting is to decide the party's stand in the elections to be held on July 18.
It is noteworthy that Shiv Sena, being an ally of the NDA, had earlier supported the presidential candidatures of Congress leaders Pratibha Patil and Pranab Mukherjee. Last week, party MPs Rahul Shewale and Rajendra Gavit wrote to Uddhav Thackeray requesting him to support Murmu.
