Famous singer Sandhya Mukhopadhyay refuses to take Padma Shri award

Renowned singer Sandhya Mukherjee has refused to accept the Padma Shri award. The singer is also known as Sandhya Mukhopadhyay. She told that the officials of the Central Government had contacted her over the telephone for this award.

Singer’s daughter Soumi Sengupta said that Mukherjee told the senior official who called from Delhi that she was not interested in getting the Padma Shri in the Republic Day award list. Sengupta said, “It is extremely disgraceful for a singer to be selected for the Padma Shri at the age of 90.” Sengupta further said, ‘Padma Shri is more suitable for a junior artist’.

Sandhya Mukherjee has been honored with many prestigious awards including ‘Bang Bibhushan’. This is the reason why she has refused to accept Padma Shri, considering it as not the best award for herself. She has worked with many music directors including Anil Vishwas, Madan Mohan, SD Burman, Roshan and Salil Choudhary.

The central government had announced the Padma awards on Tuesday. New controversies are emerging after the announcement. Before the famous singer Sandhya Mukherjee, Anindya Chattopadhyay also refused to accept the Padma Shri award. Earlier, former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had also announced not to accept the Padma Bhushan award. The names of 17 people including former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad were announced for the Padma Bhushan award.
