Gotabaya Rajapakse announces emergency in Sri Lanka

Emergency Declared in Sri Lanka: The situation in Sri Lanka, which has been facing economic crisis for the past several days, has worsened again. Seeing the increasing protests in the public, President Gotabaya Rajapakse announced the imposition of emergency in the country on Friday night. Along with this, the government has also banned protests and taking to the streets without permission.

Sri Lanka got independence from the British in the year 1948. Since then he is going through such a bad phase for the first time. The ongoing corona epidemic of Sri Lanka, which is dependent on tourism for the last 2 years, has broken its back.

Many short-sighted decisions of the Rajapaksa government did the right thing. Due to all this, the government’s treasury has become almost completely empty.

Situation is that for the last one month, there is a severe shortage of food items and medicines in Sri Lanka. The petrol pumps there are empty. People are standing there waiting for fuel but the government does not have dollars to buy oil. This serious economic crisis in the country has made the life of 220 million people of Sri Lanka hell.

People angry with the government have been protesting on the streets continuously for the last 1 month. On Friday too, a group of students tried to enter the Sri Lankan Parliament in Colombo. To stop the students, the police used water cannons and fired tear gas shells on them. Despite this, when the students did not budge, the police had to retreat.

Seeing the situation getting out of hand, Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapakse announced the imposition of emergency in the country on Friday night. At the same time, thousands of students and common people are still gathered on the road leading to Parliament and are demanding the Rajapaksa brothers to give up power. Gotabaya’s elder brother Mahinda Rajapaksa is the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
