Gujarat to introduce Bhagwad Gita in school syllabus

Bhagwat Gita in school syllabus: The Government of Gujarat has decided to include Bhagwat Gita in the syllabus of secondary and higher secondary schools from the new academic session. Under this decision, from the academic session 2022-23, Shrimad Bhagwat Gita will be included in the syllabus from class 6th to 12th. From social media to Congress leaders are vocal about this decision and expressing their opinion.

Gujarat Education Minister Jitu Vaghani had announced to make Bhagavad Gita a part of the syllabus during the recent budget session. According to Vaghani, the purpose of this decision is to make students aware of the rich and diverse culture of India. Now from class 6th to 8th, Gita will be a part of moral education. At the same time, from class 9 to 12, it will be included in the books in the first language. No separate topic will be kept for Bhagavad Gita, but its lessons will be added in many subjects. Making the values and principles of Shrimad Bhagwat Gita a part of the school curriculum is also in line with the new education policy of the Central Government.

Along with this in Gujarat various competitions based on Bhagavad Gita will be held in schools according to the syllabus. In this, verses, drawing, essay, quiz, drama will be included and study material will be given based on this.

After the announcement of the Gujarat government, the Karnataka government is also considering to include the Bhagavad Gita in the school syllabus. Karnataka Education Minister BC Nagesh has said that the matter is currently being discussed with the Chief Minister of the state Basavaraj Bommai. On the other hand, Union Minister Prahlad Joshi has suggested that like Gujarat, every state should consider teaching Bhagavad Gita in schools. He told news agency ANI, ‘Bhagvad Gita teaches us morals. It tells us about our duties towards social welfare. It has many moral stories, which can inspire our students. Every state government should think about this decision.’

The decision to teach Shrimad Bhagwat Gita in schools in Gujarat and Karnataka also saw support and opposition on social media. Many people praised this decision of the government, while many people called it a wrong decision. Many also said that when the hijab can be banned in schools, then why is the Gita being taught. Some people have also expressed apprehension that the latest decision of the government will have an impact on the minds of children and controversies may arise over religious sentiments.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah told the media, ‘There is no objection in teaching Bhagavad Gita in schools, but what about our secular constitution? Whether they teach Bhagavad Gita, Quran or Bible, we have no objection. We want the students to get quality education to meet the demand in this competitive world. Children are taught Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana and Mahabharata even at home.’

He further said that no one should take action against the Constitution.

While talking to the media, Congress leader and former Union Minister K Rahman Khan said, ‘India is a diverse country of many religions. All religious books teach Dharma. You cannot say that Gita itself teaches religion and Indian culture. Students should be taught all religious books.’
