Health Tips: Poor dental hygiene can lead to brain shrinkage, here’s how to keep your teeth clean

Dental Health

It is crucial to keep your teeth healthy. This is because it can aid in the prevention of plaque, gum disease, and cavities. However, did you realise that dental health and brain health are related?

A Tohoku University study from Sendai, Japan, which was published in the journal Neurology, discovered a link between bad dental health and a decline in brain volume or mental health.

As a result of poor dental hygiene, gum disease and tooth loss have also been linked to brain shrinkage, according to the article.

Evaluation of a connection with dementia is important

Evaluation of a potential connection with dementia is crucial since tooth loss and gum disease, which is s swelling of the tissue surrounding the teeth that can lead to gum shrinkage and tooth loosening, are quite frequent. “Our study found that these conditions may play a role in the health of the brain area that controls thinking and memory, giving people another reason to take better care of their teeth,” Satoshi Yamaguchi, of Tohoku University, said.

This research is not the first to show a connection between dental and mental health.

According to a different Health News study, dementia and cognitive decline are both made more likely by gum disease, dental cavities, and tooth loss. Additionally, according to the renowned website, “maintaining good oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing regularly, visiting the dentist for checkups and cleanings, and avoiding smoking, may help to reduce the risk of developing dementia.”

Four simple ways to keep teeth healthy and clean

Twice day, give your teeth a thorough brushing.

Use dental floss to remove food particles, stimulate gum tissue, and minimise plaque.

Regularly sip water.

Watch out for meals and beverages that are high in sugar or acid because they can damage your teeth’s enamel and cause cavities.
