India has recorded 2,22,315 new cases of coronavirus infections on Sunday, showing signs of declining trend of the second wave. However, the death toll kept soaring high and was reported at 4,454. With new additions, the country's overall death toll crosses 3 lakh mark. The active cases have further reduced to 27,20,716 comprising 10.17 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has improved to 88.69 per cent.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 2,37,28,011, while the case fatality rate has increased to 1.14 per cent, the data stated.
The health ministry has pointed out that more than 70 per cent of deaths in covid patients occur due to co morbidities.
As many as 19 lakh samples were tested on May 23, taking the cumulative total across the country past 33 crore, according to ministry's data.
India, which started its vaccination drive on January 16, has given 1,06,21,235 doses of vaccine, taking the total number of jabs to above 19.60 crore under, the ministry said. Rajasthan has given the most— 13, 17, 060—doses.

*The final decision about conducting Class 12 board exams will be taken by June 1, Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ said. "The meeting was extremely fruitful as we received immensely valuable suggestions. I have requested the state governments to send me their detailed suggestions by May 25. I am confident we will be able to arrive at an informed, collaborative decision regarding the exams and remove the uncertainty among student's and parent's minds by informing them of our final decision at the earliest," said Pokhriyal.
