What Roles Does Resting Heart Rate Play?

When you are sitting calmly or lying down, the number of beats your heart takes each minute is called resting heart rate. And it is one of the simplest and most powerful clues about your heart fitness. Healthy adults’ hearts beat 60-80 bp per minute. Athletes or highly fit individuals’ resting heart beat is between 40-50 bp per minute. Each beat runs out more blood. A less trained heart might need 70 beats to move the same blood volume that a fit heart manages in 50 bp per minute. That is the efficiency at its best.

Your heart may be under stress due various reasons, such as poor sleep, dehydration, chronic stress, excess caffeine or underlying medical conditions. But you can train your heart by doing various things, such as daily exercise, mindful meditation, adequate hydration, healthy nutrition, and quality sleep. All these lower and stabilize your resting heart rate.

Track your resting heart rate over time. A sudden jump upwards may be your body’s early warning system, telling you something is off before the bigger problems show up.
