Kerala: Second confirmed case of monkeypox in Kannur

India has confirmed the second case of monkeypox in Kerala’s Kannur district. A Kannur native who returned from Dubai on Monday was diagnosed with symptoms of monkeypox. Currently, the 31-year-old Kannur native is under treatment in the Pariyaram Medical College in Kannur and is stable, the state health department has confirmed.

The patient returned from Dubai to Kannur on May 13, 2022, but he developed the symptoms later on. Meanwhile, the close contacts of the infected person are currently under observation. His samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune and they tested positive for monkeypox, said officials.

The first ever case of monkeypox was confirmed in the Kollam district on July 14, 2022.

Monkeypox symptoms

The initial symptoms of monkeypox include – swollen lymph nodes, high fever, and similar blistery chicken-pox rashes. The overflow of monkeypox infection was reported in early May outside of the west and African countries wherein the disease has been declared endemic.

About Monkeypox

Most monkeypox infections have been observed in men who have sex with the same gender of young age in metropolitan areas, as per the WHO. As per the available statistics, almost all patients affected thus far are male, with a median age of 37, with three-fifths identifying as men who have sex with men, the WHO said.
