Punjab’s Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana (MMSY) has recorded 12,467 treatments for sepsis and septic shock worth ₹51.58 crore till September 1, highlighting the serious medical and financial burden associated with the condition.
According to the Punjab government, the figures include treatments for both severe sepsis and septic shock under the state’s healthcare scheme.
Of the total cases, 10,961 treatments were related to severe sepsis, involving expenditure of ₹44.33 crore. Meanwhile, 1,506 treatments for septic shock accounted for ₹7.25 crore.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh stressed the importance of recognising sepsis at an early stage. He cautioned that an infection that may initially appear routine can rapidly become dangerous if it progresses into sepsis and septic shock.
Sepsis can worsen progressively and affect the body’s vital functions. In severe cases, serious circulatory problems can result in inadequate blood flow to important organs, potentially leading to septic shock.
The minister emphasised the need for timely recognition and appropriate medical attention, particularly as the condition can become increasingly serious within a short period.
Severe Sepsis Accounts for Majority of Treatments
The data released under MMSY shows that severe sepsis accounted for the overwhelming majority of the treatments recorded so far.
The 10,961 severe-sepsis treatments represented nearly 88 per cent of the total sepsis-related treatments, while 1,506 cases involved septic shock.
The expenditure figures also demonstrate the financial impact of treating serious infection-related complications. Together, treatments for severe sepsis and septic shock have resulted in claims worth more than ₹51 crore under the health scheme.
