Supreme Court Says Doctors Gave Dolo After 1,000-Crore Freebies

Supreme Court judge Justice DY Chandrachud was suddenly stunned during the hearing of a case on Thursday when he remembered that the doctor had given him Dolo 650 tablets while suffering from Covid.

Actually, the hearing was going on on the matter of bribing doctors on the company making dolo. An NGO claimed that the Dolo manufacturer distributed Rs 1,000 crore to doctors.

On this, a bench of Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice AS Bopanna said that it should be got to the bottom of the allegation, calling it a serious issue.

Petition stated that Dolo- 650 — a tablet prescribed for fever — and said its manufacturers have invested ₹ 1000 crore in freebies.

A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Justice AS Bopanna called it a “serious matter” and asked the Centre to file its response within 10 days.

“This is not music to ears. Even I was asked to have same medicine when I had Covid. This is a serious matter,” said Justice DY Chandrachud.

The Supreme Court termed the allegation as a “serious issue”. The bench asked Additional Solicitor General KM Natraj to file his reply on the petition in 10 days and thereafter gave Parikh a week’s time to file his reply. The court has fixed September 29 for the next hearing of the case.

Senior advocate Sanjay Parikh and advocate Aparna Bhat, appearing for the petitioner ‘Federation of Medical and Sales Representative Association of India’, filed a petition before Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice A.S Bopanna that the market price of any tablet up to 500 mg is controlled under the government’s price control mechanism.

Appearing for the Federation, senior advocate Sanjay Parikh said, “Dolo invested over 1000 crore in freebies to doctors so they would promote the drug”.

The petition also cited that this type of practice not only result in over-use of drugs, it can also jeopardise the health of the patients. Which also increases corruption, also pushes high-priced.

The petition further demands the top court to ensure that the Uniform Code of Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices be made effective by providing a monitoring mechanism, transparency and accountability.
