Wuhan lab: The United States has cut off all funding to the Wuhan-based lab which many suspect is linked to the Covid pandemic.
Bloomberg news reports that the Biden administration has stopped all funds to the Wuhan Institute of Virology because of safety and security concerns. Hindustan Times says this is the most extreme “measure that the US has taken over biosafety practices in China.”
Safety concerns
The Department of Health said that it is cutting off all aid to the Wuhan lab permanently after a review that began last September. This lab is not compliant with federal regulations. It is noteworthy that the Wuhan Institute of Virology hasn’t received any federal funding since 2020.
CNN reports that the Department of Health has also proposed “barring the Wuhan Institute from doing business with the federal government.”
An HHS (Health and Human Services) spokesman said in a statement, “The move was undertaken due to WIV’s failure to provide documentation on WIV’s research requested by NIH related to concerns that WIV violated NIH’s biosafety protocols.” The statement added, “This action aims to ensure that WIV does not receive another dollar of federal funding,”
No evidence
Several health experts say the Covid pandemic originated from the Wuhan lab. Christopher Ray, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation suspects that the Covid virus was a result of animal-to-human transmission or a lab accident. However, there is no evidence that backs his claim.
Last month, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said it found no proof that there was indeed any link between the virus and the Wuhan lab. However, the department identified certain safety issues in the lab.
Many other experts believe that the virus originated naturally and spread from Wuhan’s seafood market.
The Wuhan lab receives federal funding from EcoHealth Alliance, a US-based organization.
