The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Sunday continued massive relief and rescue efforts in the flood-affected areas of Assam. The Air Force provided relief material to the people. The Indian Air Force on Saturday deployed an AN-32 transport aircraft, two Mi-17 helicopters, a Chinook helicopter and an ALH Dhruv to rescue 119 stranded passengers at Ditokchera railway station.
20 NDRF personnel have been deployed in flood-affected areas in Assam. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the state government are jointly carrying out relief and rescue operations. Indian Army, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and NDRF with the help of volunteers have rescued a total of 24,749 people trapped in the floods.
According to NDRF Inspector Maheep Maurya, the teams deployed for the rescue operation have rescued 500 people from the flood-affected villages of Hojai district. Maurya said, “Many people did not want to leave their homes, so we gave relief and ration material at their homes.”
According to the report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 499 relief camps and 519 relief distribution centers have been opened in all the affected areas. Presently a total of 92,124 people are living in the camps. The ASDMA report also said that a total of 8,39,691 people in 3,246 villages in 32 districts have been affected by the floods. Six of these districts have been affected by landslides.
According to the data, 14 people (9 in floods and 5 in landslides) have died in the first phase of the floods. Crops in 100,732.43 hectares of land have been affected by this natural calamity in the state.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already predicted rain with peak intensity on Monday (May 23) over Northwest and East India from May 21 to May 24.
