Income tax raids at top think tank

The Income Tax Department’s raids are going on at the Center of Policy Research, an independent think-tank based in Delhi. Sources told media that this action on CPR is related to the raids by the Income Tax Department in Haryana, Maharashtra and Gujarat. The Income Tax Department is conducting raids at several places over “funding of more than 20 registered but unrecognized political parties”.

The head of this center has once been a prominent critic of the BJP government and educationist Pratap Bhanu Mehta. At present, the chairperson of the governing board of CPR is Meenakshi Gopinath. Political scientist Gopinath used to teach at Jawaharlal Nehru University and has been the principal of Lady Shri Ram College in New Delhi. Its President and Chief Executive is Yamini Iyer. Its board members include former foreign secretary Shyam Saran and IIM professor Rama Bijapurkar.

Regarding the funding, the thinktank said on its website that being recognized as a non-profit society by the Government of India, contributions are tax-free. CPR receives grants from a variety of domestic and international sources, including foundations, corporate philanthropy, governments and multilateral agencies, with annual finances and full accounts of the grants available on the website.

Established in 1973, it describes itself as “a non-partisan, independent institution that conducts research.” Which contributes to higher quality scholarship, better policies and stronger public talk about the issues affecting life in India.
