According to a United Nations report, India is about to overtake China as the world's most populous country next year. This report, which came on Monday, said that the world's population is estimated to reach eight billion by mid-November 2022.

The Economic and Social Affairs Unit of the United Nations Department of Population has stated in the World Population Prospect 2022 that the world population is projected to reach eight billion on November 15, 2022.

The world's population has been growing at the slowest pace since 1950. It has come down to less than one percent in 2020. New projections from the United Nations suggest that the world's population could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050.

The world population is projected to reach a peak of about 10.4 billion people by 2080 and remain at the same level until 2100.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that, "This year's World Population Day (July 11) is a milestone when we look forward to the birth of the eight billionth inhabitant of the Earth. Let's celebrate our diversity. Recognize our common humanity, and marvel at the advances in health that have extended lifespans and dramatically reduced maternal and child mortality."

"At the same time it is a reminder of our shared responsibility to care for our planet and a moment to reflect on where we still fall short in our commitments to each other," he said.

The report said that "India is projected to overtake China as the world's most populous country in 2023." The two most populous regions of the world in 2022 are East and South-East Asia, with 2.3 billion people.

There are 2.1 billion people in Central and Southern Asia, representing 26 percent of the total world population.

China and India are the largest populated countries with over 1.4 billion people in the year 2022. More than half of the projected growth in global population by 2050 will be concentrated in just eight countries of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Tanzania.

The report states that, "Uneven population growth rates among the world's largest countries will alter their ranking by size. For example, India is expected to overtake China as the world's most populous country in 2023."

According to the report, the population of India in 2022 is 1.412 billion, while the population of China is 1.426 billion. India, which will overtake China as the world's most populous country by 2023, is estimated to have a population of 1.668 billion in 2050. This will be far ahead of China's 1.317 billion people by the middle of the century.
