Karnataka election 2023: Polls to be held on May 10, counting on May 13

Karnataka election 2023: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday announced the schedule for the upcoming Karnataka assembly election. Karnataka, being the only state in south with BJP is in power, holds a great importance for the BJP as the party ups its sleeves to build up its roadmap for upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024. BJP had won 104 seats in the 224-member assembly, the Congress, on the other hand, won 80 seats in 2018. This year, it is expected to be close contest between the two major parties. Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to address a roadshow in the poll-bound state on April 5.

Karnataka polls schedule announced

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced that Karnataka will go to poll in a single-phase on May 10, while counting of votes will take place on May 13. “More than 9.17 lakh first-time voters to participate in the election in Karnataka. Also, under Advance Application Facility, more than 1.25 lakh applications were received from 17 years+ youths, out of which around 41,000 applications were received from those turning 18 years by April 1, 2023,” the CEC said.

The total number of transgenders in the state is 42,756, as per Arun Goyal, the Election Commissioner of India. Meanwhile, in a first voting from home will be available for 80+ citizens and people with disabilities.

This election will be development-oriented: Karnataka Congress chief 

Congress is ready of the elections, said Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar, adding ‘we want this government to be dismissed. “This election will be development-oriented and for a corruption-free state and the country. Corruption is at its peak and PM Modi encouraged it, he did not take any action against his party leaders,” he said. 

BJP confident of victory 

Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai has expressed confidence that the BJP will come back with power in the state. 

“The party and the government are absolutely ready for the elections. Preparations are already underway. We are just waiting for the ECI to announce the dates. We are sure to come back to power with huge majority,” he said.
