Kerala pitches in with 10 crore for relief rescue activity in quake hit Turkey, Syria

In the State Assembly, Finance Minister KN Balagopal made the announcement that the state government would contribute Rs 10 crore to humanitarian efforts in Turkey and Syria. A resolution honouring the citizens of Turkey and Syria was tabled in the Assembly at the same time by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Kerala becomes the first individual state to announce Rs 10 crore for humanitarian assistance in earthquake hit regions in Turkey and Syria

The most current data from agencies states that as of Wednesday, there were around 11,200 fatalities in the earthquake-stricken countries of Turkey and Syria. A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team, meanwhile, left for Turkey on Tuesday to assist with relief and rescue efforts in the nation where thousands of people have died after being shaken by an earthquake of magnitude 7.8, according to officials.

According to the officials, the central contingency force’s personnel in orange dungarees are joined by two search dogs, four-wheel vehicles, and communication equipment.

A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) officer told agencies that a total of 101 people from two teams headquartered in Ghaziabad, close to Delhi, and Kolkata, along with equipment, have boarded an Indian Air Force (IAF) C-17 aircraft towards Turkey.

According to the officer, this is a component of the humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) measures the Indian government declared on Monday for the earthquake-stricken Turkey and surrounding territories.

As per him, the teams will provide all support requested by the local authorities there, including helping in rescuing anyone trapped beneath the collapsed structures.

The officer claims that there are female rescues on the team as well.

International Operations participation by NDRF

The NDRF has previously participated in two of these worldwide operations: the 2015 Nepal earthquake and the triple calamity that struck Japan in 2011 (earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown).

As directed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government resolved to send NDRF teams, medical supplies, and relief supplies to Turkey as soon as possible on Monday.

More than 4,000 people were murdered and thousands of houses were destroyed in Turkey and neighbouring Syria on Monday due to an earthquake. It originated in the Kahramanmaras area of southeast Turkey and was felt as far away as Cairo.
