Ministry of Railways: First cable-stayed rail bridge 50% complete, work on in full swing

Railway Updates: The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project’s work on the Anji Khad Bridge has been completed to more than half of its original scope by Indian Railways. The Union Ministry of Railways shared a status update on Twitter along with various images of the bridge that was still being built.

The tweet from the ministry stated, “Overcoming the difficult geographic conditions, the construction is continuing on in full speed.

Anji Khad Bridge, which connects Katra and Reasi, has been hailed as a feat of engineering. Within the next two years, Kashmir will be connected to the rest of India by railway thanks to the link, which will be the first cable-stayed rail bridge ever built in India.

The bridge will be 331 metres tall when it is finished, exceeding the height of Paris’ Eiffel Tower. 96 cables will support the bridge, which will be 473.25 metres long overall. The bridge is notably located above the Anji River and is a component of the USBRL project.

The work has been divided into the following sections: Udhampur to Katra (25 km), Katra to Banihal (111 km), Banihal to Quazigund (18 km), and Quazigund to Baramulla, according to the project’s official website (118 km).

According to the website, this project is arguably the most challenging new railway line undertaking on the Indian subcontinent. The young Himalayas, which are full of geological surprises and myriad issues, are traversed by the terrain.

It is important to note that, as part of the same USBRL project, Indian Railways is building the Chenab bridge, the highest railway bridge in the world. The bridge is being built in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, is 1,315 metres long, and is intended to improve connectivity in the Kashmir valley. According to sources, the Chenab Arch bridge can survive strong wind speeds of up to 266 km/h and can withstand earthquake forces of the maximum intensity zone-V in India.
