Mohan Majhi— In a historic moment for Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi took oath as the state's first BJP Chief Minister this evening. The grand ceremony, held amidst much fanfare, also saw the swearing-in of his two deputies, KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, signaling the BJP's significant political arrival in eastern India. The event was graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, numerous Union ministers, and other distinguished guests.
In a gesture of old-world political courtesy, Naveen Patnaik, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief who led the state for 24 years, attended the ceremony. Majhi had personally invited Patnaik by visiting his residence the previous evening. This transition marks a notable shift in Odisha's political landscape, as the BJP secured 78 out of the 147 assembly seats in the recent elections, while the BJD won 51 seats and failed to secure any seats in parliament. Following the BJD's electoral defeat, Patnaik's close aide, VK Pandiyan, resigned from the party.
Mohan Charan Majhi Sworn in as First BJP Chief Minister of Odisha
Mohan Charan Majhi, 52, a seasoned politician and a four-time MLA from Keonjhar, has been recognized for his public service and organizational skills, which played a crucial role in his rise to the top post. Known as the party's tribal face, Majhi previously served as the chief whip of the BJP in the last assembly and was the youngest among the top contenders for the chief ministership.
His deputy, KV Singh Deo, brings extensive political experience as a six-time MLA and an erstwhile royal from the Patna princely state in Bolangir. Deo served as a minister in the Naveen Patnaik government for nine years until 2009, when the BJP and the BJD were in alliance. The second deputy, Pravati Parida, 57, is a first-time MLA with a long-standing association with the BJP, having held positions such as the chief of the state BJP women's wing and the state BJP Vice President.

Odisha's political mandate shifted dramatically after a proposed alliance between the BJP and the BJD collapsed. The BJP's aggressive campaign highlighted the lack of development in many districts, a charge the BJD vehemently denied. This decisive election victory reflects the changing political dynamics and voter sentiment in Odisha, setting the stage for the BJP's new governance approach in the state.
