National Highways to be pothole-free by December end? Nitin Gadkari sets deadline, Details

Nitin Gadkari: According to the news agency PTI, Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and highways, stated on September 28 that a policy is being developed to have “pothole-free” highways throughout the nation by the end of the year.

National Highways to be pothole free says Nitin Gadkari

Along with Gadkari, Secretary of Road Transport and Highways Anurag Jain briefed reporters in New Delhi, stating that the ministry had completed the mapping of the 1,46,000 km of national highways and was finalising performance-based maintenance and short-term maintenance contracts to fill potholes by December of this year.

The government is probably going to award contracts for the next highway development projects using the Built-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model because Gadkari noted that roads built using this approach are thought to be more durable and properly maintained.

The reason behind the move

The government is worried about the thousands of fatalities caused by vehicle accidents each year on the nation’s highways. This is the rationale behind the ongoing efforts made by successive governments. On the other hand, the government also unveiled Bharat NCAP recently. No longer will domestically produced vehicles need to travel abroad to receive safety ratings.
