One killed, many injured as tornadoes hit Mississippi in the United States

United States: At least one person was killed in rural Mississippi as multiple tornadoes hit the south-eastern state on Monday. Drones showed mangled homes and wreckage strewn in tornado-stricken areas.

Associated Press reports that the lone death occurred in eastern Mississippi’s Jasper County. So far, twelve injuries have been reported.

The small rural town of Louin in Jasper County bore the brunt of the damage, reports AP. Drone footage showed uprooted trees, and mangled homes in the town.

A Louin local, Lester Campbell told the news agency that his cousin George Jean Hayes died in the tornado. Hayes was 67 at the time of her death. When reached by phone, Coroner Don Sumall said Hayes had died due to “multisystem trauma.”

Becky Collins, a spokesperson for the South Central Medical Center in Laurel, told AP that most of the injured people injured in Jasper were transferred to her facility. 20 people had “cuts and bruises.” She added. Most of the victims were in stable condition, Collins said.

According to Reuters, two dozen were injured in these tornadoes which are quite unexpected during this season. The injury count may rise further, Reuters says.

No power

Power outage tracking website Poweroutage.us reports that 400,000 people across the southern United States were without power last night. More than 10% of this figure was in Mississippi alone.

Reuters reports that a dangerous heatwave across the southern United States had caused tornadoes in Texas and Florida. This might have sparked extreme weather conditions in Mississippi as well.

Tornadoes in the US

According to CBS, 71 people have died due to tornadoes between 1993 and 2022. This data is taken from the National Weather Service.

The highest incidences of “twisters” (tornadoes) have been in Alabama, Missouri, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Georgia.
