PK Sinha, one of the most senior bureaucrats in the Narendra Modi-led government, has resigned on personal grounds, sources claimed on March 16.

A 1977-batch IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, Sinha was serving as the Principal Advisor to Prime Minister Modi since September 2019. Before assuming the role, he had served as the Cabinet Secretary for four years.

“He has relinquished charge on March 15,’’ said a top official, not wanting to be named.

Another top official said the reason for Sinha’s exit is his health. “He’s having some issues and it was considered that it was better to be away from such a high-pressure job that he is in now. Mr Sinha has been an exemplary officer who is a top performer.”

Sinha has served in various key posts in both the Union Minsitry and the Government of Uttar Pradesh. He has beeen Principal Secretary (Irrigation), commissioner of Varanasi division, Investment Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh, additional CEO of Greater Noida, additional resident commissioner of Uttar Pradesh, the district magistrate and collector of districts of Agra and Jaunpur, secretary of Uttaranchal Development Authority and as the vice chairman of Meerut Development Authority in the Uttar Pradesh government.

During his tenure as the Cabinet Secretary, Sinha, has been widely regarded as one of the most powerful people in India.
