PM Modi to hold all-party meet on Jammu and Kashmir

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold an all-party meeting on Jammu and Kashmir. This is the first meeting between the Centre and prominent Jammu and Kashmir parties after Article 370 was abrogated and the state was divided into two union territories in 2019.

Who all are invited?

Among the fourteen leaders who are scheduled to participate in the meeting are Congress’ Ghulam Nabi Azad, Tara Chand and GA Mir; National Conference’s Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah; PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti, J-K Apni Party’s Altaf Bukhari; BJP’s Ravinder Raina, Nirmal Singh and Kavinder Gupta; CPI(M)’s M Y Tarigami; National Panthers Party’s Prof Bheem Singh; and Peoples Conference’s Sajad Gani Lone.

Home Minister Amit Shah, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and Home Secretary would also attend the meeting.

What will be the key issue of discussion?

As per sources, key issues like delimitation and assembly elections are likely to be discussed that may pave the way for the political processes in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting can also discuss a blueprint to begin the political process in the Union Territory.

With all eyes on the crucial meeting, leaders from several J&K-based parties have reached New Delhi to meet at 3pm.

BJP MP demands separate legislature for UT

Ahead of the meet BJP MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal and few socio-religious groups demanded a separate legislature for the Union Territory of Ladakh.

The group wants a separate schedule in the Constitution of India for safeguarding the land ownership, job reservation, environmental and cultural preservation of locals inhabitants from the Ladakh region.
