50% voter turnout recorded as voting ends for high-stakes MCD elections

MCD elections: As polling for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) got over on Sunday at 5.30 pm in the national capital, the Election Commision reported 50% voter turnout. This was much less compared to the last two elections. As many as 1.45 crore people were eligible to cast their votes and choose from 1,349 candidates contesting for 250 wards. Counting of votes will be conducted on December 7.

Stakes for all three parties, AAP, BJP and Congress, are high in the three-cornered contest.

Reports said the voter turnout recorded was 50% when the polls closed at 5:30 pm on Sunday. In 2017 MCD elections voter turnout was 53.55%. Till 5 pm less than 50% voter turnout was recorded.

SEC directive to Congress chief

The state Election Commission asked Delhi Congress president Anil Chaudhary to contact the Chief Electoral Officer as he complained his name was missing from the voter list. The SEC said it followed the electoral roll provided by the ECI in the MCD elections. It added that it does not add or delete names from the voter list and that exercise falls under ECI’s domain.

Villagers boycott election

People of Katewara village in Delhi’s North West district boycotted the MCD elections. They did this to mark their protest against lack of amenities like roads and drains in the village.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Anurag Thakur expressed confidence that lotus will bloom in the MCD elections as also in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. “BJP will form government again in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and will also win in MCD”, he added.
