Rahul Gandhi, during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting that the upcoming Ram Mandir inauguration ceremony in Ayodhya has been turned into a political event. This comes amidst notable Congress leaders declining invitations to the event, citing concerns over its political nature.
Political Accusations and Congress Stand
Gandhi criticized the BJP and RSS for transforming the January 22 function into a political showcase for Prime Minister Modi. He expressed the Congress's open stance toward all religions but emphasized the political design around the Prime Minister and the RSS as a deterrent.
Congress Leaders Reject Invitations
Key Congress figures, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former president Sonia Gandhi, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, have declined invitations to the temple consecration ceremony, alleging the BJP's attempt to turn it into an electoral tool. This rejection reflects a growing sentiment within the Congress party against what they perceive as the politicization of the sacred event.
BJP's Response and Accusations
In response, the BJP labeled Congress leaders as opportunists, accusing them of playing politics with their decisions. Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi referred to them as 'barsati mendak' (rain frogs), suggesting their flexibility for political gains. Lekhi urged the Congress leaders to clear their conscience, pointing out their previous dismissive stance on Lord Ram.
Congress Spiritual Observance in Ayodhya
Despite leaders boycotting the temple ceremony, the Congress's Uttar Pradesh unit proceeded with their plan to observe Makar Sankranti in Ayodhya. Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai and other party members took a holy dip in the Saryu River on January 15, maintaining a spiritual presence in the holy city.
