Basavaraj Bommai has been sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Karnataka

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Basavaraj Bommai has been sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Karnataka. Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot administered the oath of secrecy to him. According to the information, the cabinet will be expanded later. Before taking oath on Wednesday, Bommai started his day by taking blessings of God at Anjaneya temple. Before taking oath, he said that today we will hold a cabinet meeting, followed by a meeting of senior officials to review the situation of covid and floods in the state.

Basavaraj Bommai, the new Chief Minister of Karnataka was born on 28 January 1960. Along with the Ministry of Water Resources and Cooperation, he has also served as the Minister in charge of Haveri and Udupi districts. Basavaraj Bommai, a graduate in Mechanical Engineering, started his political career with the Janata Dal.

The number two leader in the state government comes from the Bommai Lingayat community. Till now he was holding the post of Parliamentary Affairs Minister and Law Minister along with the Home Minister of the state. Bommai is considered close to BS Yediyurappa and belongs to the ‘Janata Parivar’. His father SR Bommai has also been the Chief Minister of Karnataka.

The Lingayat community constitutes about 17 per cent of the population of Karnataka. The Lingayat community dominates over 100 seats in the 224-member assembly. In such a situation, after the removal of Yeddyurappa, BJP has tried to calculate the power in the assembly elections to be held in 2023 by making someone from the Lingayat community as the new CM.

Regards Basavaraj, coming from the Lingayat community, is a mechanical engineer by profession. Being associated with agriculture, he is considered to be knowledgeable in the irrigation matters of Karnataka. He is appreciated for launching several irrigation projects in the state. He is also credited with implementing India’s first 100% pipe irrigation project in his constituency. His father SR Bommai has also been the Chief Minister of Karnataka. Basavaraj joined the BJP in 2008 and then continued to climb up in the party. He has previously been the Minister of Water Resources in the state government. He started his political career with Janata Dal.
