BJP Leaders Criticize Uddhav Thackeray’s Remark on Ram Temple Inauguration

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s warning of a “conspiracy yielding a Godhra-like incident” in the name of the Ram temple’s inauguration in Ayodhya has drawn sharp criticism from senior BJP leaders.

BJP’s Response to Uddhav Thackeray’s Remark:
Uddhav Thackeray’s statement was met with strong reactions from BJP leaders, who expressed their disapproval in various ways:

  1. Ravi Shankar Prasad’s Critique:
  • Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad reminded Uddhav Thackeray that his late father, Balasaheb Thackeray, had supported and blessed the Ram temple movement. He questioned whether Balasaheb Thackeray would have approved of his son’s statement.
  • Prasad highlighted the historical significance of the Ram Janmbhoomi movement and suggested that the alliance opposing Prime Minister Modi was willing to make such statements for political gains.
  1. Anurag Thakur’s Response:
  • Union Minister Anurag Thakur criticized Uddhav Thackeray for being “greedy” and steered the conversation towards another ongoing controversy related to Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin’s remark on ‘Sanatan Dharm’.
  1. Pramod Sawant’s Slam:
  • Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant also condemned Uddhav Thackeray’s statement, reflecting the disapproval of the remark by BJP leaders at multiple levels of government.

Uddhav Thackeray’s warning about potential unrest during the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya comes ahead of the 2024 general election, where the BJP is seeking an unprecedented third term in power and has championed the temple’s construction. The Supreme Court awarded the land to Hindus in a landmark verdict in 2019, which remains a contentious issue.

In his statement, Uddhav Thackeray expressed concerns about the possibility of violence and unrest, evoking memories of the tragic Godhra incident in Gujarat in 2002, when some coaches of the Sabarmati Express were set on fire, resulting in significant loss of life and communal tensions.
