BJP MP Rita Bahuguna, 4 others convicted of poll code violation

Rita Bahuguna Joshi, a member of the BJP, and four other defendants were found guilty on Friday by a special court in Lucknow of violating the model code of conduct while running for office in the 2012 general election.

The court ruled that all convicted people, including Joshi, must serve a minimum of six months on probation before being given permission to leave custody. The court further ordered them to present a personal bond in the amount of Rs 20,000 and two sureties in the amount of Rs 20,000 to the district probation officer in order to maintain good behaviour throughout the six-month probationary period, according to government attorney Sonu Singh (Lucknow).

Joshi, who formerly supported the Congress, defeated the opposition in Prayagraj during the most recent parliamentary election.

They were found guilty by the court under sections 188 of the Indian Penal Code (disobedience to order lawfully proclaimed by public servant) and 133 of the Representation of People Act. Joshi and others were charged with breaking the model code of conduct by travelling in so many automobiles. It was also alleged that several vehicles had loudspeakers put on them.
