Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam

In a recent incident during the ongoing Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam, the Congress party claims that BJP workers allegedly “manhandled” senior leader Jairam Ramesh’s car and media persons accompanying the yatra. The incident occurred in Sonitpur district, marking the fourth day of Rahul Gandhi-led yatra in the state.

Alleged Attack Before Rahul Gandhi’s Rally

The reported attack took place just before Rahul Gandhi’s scheduled rally in Kaliabor, Nagaon district. According to the Congress, BJP supporters, marching on the route of Rahul Gandhi, allegedly vandalized vehicles, including Ramesh’s car, and attacked media persons accompanying the yatra.

Assam Chief Minister’s Response

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Sarma responded to the incident by instructing the Assam DGP to register a case and probe into the allegations made by the Congress.

Congress Account of the Incident

Mahima Singh, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) communications coordinator, stated that BJP supporters created an intimidating situation for the Congress yatra. She alleged that Congress Jodo Nyay Yatra stickers were torn, and an attempt was made to put a BJP flag on Ramesh’s vehicle.

Jairam Ramesh’s Accusations

Jairam Ramesh, in a video tweet, claimed that the attack was orchestrated by Himanta Sarma. He alleged that BJP workers surrounded his car, threw water, and shouted slogans against the yatra.

Congress Strong Stand

Congress leader Supriya Shrinate condemned the attack, asserting that neither Sarma nor his “goons” can halt the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. The party insists on continuing the yatra despite such incidents, declaring themselves as “warriors of justice.”

Previous Allegations and Responses

This is not the first incident during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. Previously, the Congress alleged attacks on vehicles and banners by BJP supporters in North Lakhimpur. Assam DGP denied such targeting, stating that the yatra had peacefully entered Arunachal Pradesh.
